Flashcube Apartments

Flashcube was originally built in 1974 for Commerce Bank and was the first all-glass exterior building in downtown Kansas City. It was just recently converted from vacant office space into a 184 unit apartment building. FormanFord rejuvenated the exterior with a full curtain wall reglazing while maintaining the historical aesthetics.

About This Project

This 10 story historical building had been vacant for 12 years before being converted into multi tenant housing project with ground floor being retail with amentities. Challenge was converting from an old Kawneer tape system into a custom gasket, pressure plate and cover application. All original screws were rusty and had to be ground off. Spandrel areas were 1/4 glass thickness. In order to pass historical society requirements it was necessary to use 2 different coatings to achieve their required aesthetics. Project borders I35 on north side and caught a lot of attention while we were working on it including making the nightly local news.
